Introducing Our Baby To Our Cat

We knew Miss Kitty wouldn’t handle it well. I mean we just knew it. My husband and I got our cat a few years before having a baby, and we spoiled her rotten. She had all our attention, love, cuddles, and we never forgot to give her her nightly treat. Then one day we left for a couple of days and returned home with a thing that cried all the time, needed all of our attention, and took her place of cuddling with us. And “Big Sister Miss Kitty” knew the second we stepped in the house with the new baby that something was off. The first meeting of Maddie Grace and Miss Kitty involved hissing and running away.

 

The first couple of months were rough. I didn’t want Maddie Grace near Miss Kitty because I was scared she would bite her. We really didn’t see much of Miss Kitty at all during this time which made me sad – I missed her! Then one day Maddie Grace started crying out of nowhere and I saw Miss Kitty run up to her, seemingly concerned. After that things started to change. Slowly we saw Miss Kitty show more interest in Maddie Grace. Next thing we knew Miss Kitty always seemed to be in whatever room Maddie Grace was in, laying within a few feet of her.

The crawling stage brought some new challenges to the relationship. Maddie Grace began crawling to Miss Kitty (always her target) and pulling her fur – hard. Miss Kitty did not like this one bit and again I was scared she might try to hurt Maddie Grace. But over time we taught Maddie Grace “nice pets” and she’s gotten a lot better. It’s interesting though – even if Maddie Grace is rough with Miss Kitty, Miss Kitty is never far away from her. Almost like she really wants Maddie Grace to give her that attention, even if she’s going to complain about it once she gets it.

Now I really think Maddie Grace considers Miss Kitty her best friend, which is fun to watch. “Kitty” is definitely MG’s most frequently said word, trumping even dada, and now that she can walk she is even more efficient at chasing Miss Kitty around the house. MG gets the biggest smiles from watching Miss Kitty and giving her pets, and Miss Kitty seems to enjoy her company as well.

Because we really do love Miss Kitty, even if some nights now we
forget to give her a night treat, we make sure we feed her the best. I
