My first encounter with Mo Willems books was actually when a Mo Willems exhibit came to the High Museum here in Atlanta. Maddie Grace was only 15 months or so at the time and we really didn’t know if she would like it or not. What we saw was a chance to do an adult-ish activity with our toddler in tow and being able to justify it because it was a children’s author exhibit. To our surprise, Maddie Grace loved it. We held her and walked to the different drawings, and she seemed to love looking at all the different characters and then going to a story time activity. And of course when we left we had to visit the gift store and buy two Mo Willems books to bring home that have become staples in our house. There’s something about the lovable and fun animal characters that make these books really stand out among others.
That’s why our family is really excited for the new Elephant & Piggie Like Reading series created by Mo Willems. In these books best friends Elephant and Piggie introduce young readers to their favorite books. So to celebrate this new series and Elephant and Piggie turning 10 years old, we had a little party. Because life is short why not celebrate these things? We had some snacks and fruit juice, did some crafts and coloring, and of course read Elephant and Piggie books!
My kids love the new Elephant & Piggie Like Reading! book: The Good for Nothing Button. This book is all about a button that yellow bird says does nothing. But his friends red bird and blue bird thing that the button can make people happy, or mad. It’s a great book for talking about emotions and realizing other people’s emotions. And my kids like to press the big red button that comes with the book. Our top 10 Elephant and Piggie Books are:
