We love being outdoors in the summer. Even though it makes my hair so frizzy. The kids love popsicles in the backyard, hiking on one of Atlanta’s many trails, hitting up playgrounds, and even going up to the mountains to explore. But of course there are ways to be outdoors to make life more bearable in the Georgia heat (and humidity). Here are the things we absolutely must have on hand when spending time outdoors:
Insect Repellant. And most importantly one without DEET, like Guardian. I’ve known that using insect replants with DEET is a big no no ever since going to girl scout camp as a kid where DEET bug sprays are strictly prohibited. But because the mosquitos and ticks are so bad around us, I need something effective that I can use on my family. Guardian is plant based, non-toxic, and protects from mosquitos for up to 8 hours and ticks for up to 4 hours. It actually smells good thanks to the essential oils in it, and is safe to use around outdoor equipment. I purchased Guardian at my neighborhood Kroger for 25% off but if you don’t have a Kroger near you look for it on Amazon.com!
Fans. It gets so hot this time of year and the last thing you want is a kid overheating while outdoors because it can be really dangerous. I like the carry around the ones that spray water as well as the little fans you wear around your neck like a necklace.
Umbrella. We’ve had daily pop up thunderstorms here so a little umbrella in my bag is a must have. There is nothing worse than getting caught in rain and not having something to cover your head as you run for cover.
Sturdy shoes. I op for the sandals that are close toed for my kiddos, and hiking sandals for my husband and myself, for our adventures. The last thing I want when we are exploring is to have a toddler complaining about something getting in her shoe.
