A big shift happens in babies around or shortly after the 6 month mark. When they start crawling and pulling up and are suddenly all over the place. And suddenly their main needs change with that. They don’t want to stay in seats. My baby doesn’t even want to be in a bouncer anymore. She wants to be free to move everywhere and just wants to explore. And I encourage this as much as I can, with lots of baby proofing and keeping a careful eye on her while she does this. Because of this the staples and essentials you need for baby shift. You need less stuff (less bouncers, less seats, etc) which is great, but the stuff you do have needs to be focused towards your baby’s new needs. So here are our staples for this 6-12 month age range:
Comfortable Clothes: All the crawling and exploring means you need clothes that keep baby comfortable. Things you don’t worry about when they are smaller, like having their knees covered for crawling, become very important. We’ve become huge fans of the new line of Gerber Brand Essentials available on Amazon! The line is made with organically grown cotton which is super soft and high quality and also promotes sustainability. It has been tested to make sure that no harmful chemicals are touching your sweet baby’s skin. There are so many different cute patterns of bodysuits (I got this pink and white pattern!) and coordinating pants that keep baby comfortable whether on the move or taking a nap. And of course, since your baby is going to be crawling in dirt and making a mess while eating, these pieces are the best price for the quality you get which is what every parent wants!
Sleep Basics: One of the things your baby still needs at 6-12 months is a safe and comfortable sleep area. With all of my kids at 6 months we transferred them to sleeping in the crib. To make it as comfortable for Millie as possible we use Gerber crib sheets. It’s made of the same super soft organic cotton as the apparel.
Soft Blocks: Soft block are one of my favorite toys for this age. Babies can shove them in their mouths, throw them, or start working on stacking and start learning about patterns.
High Chair: At 6 months old your baby is most likely going to start exploring solid foods and loving it. And at 6 months old babies are also super messy when they eat. A high chair gives them a safe spot to eat and keeps their food mess contained to that area.
Musical Instruments: Millie loves banging on drums, hitting the piano keys, or shaking the little rattle eggs we have around. Musical instruments are such a fun way to let your kid explore different sounds and movements while having fun!
Textile books: Millie still isn’t really into having books read to her but she loves when she gets her hands on her books that are crunchy or have different textures she can touch in them. It’s a great way for both of us to bond and for her to enjoy exploring different feelings in her little hands!
