When I found out I was pregnant with Maddie Grace the idea of breastfeeding didn’t even cross my mind. I mean I even registered for formula with her and stocked up on every free sample I could get my hands on because I figured I would use it. Then shortly before my due date a friend turned me on to a breastfeeding support group and I became inspired to give breastfeeding a real try. And you know what? I loved it. I had a great experience breastfeeding Maddie Grace and kept it up until she was 18 months. It wasn’t always easy, it was incredibly hard at first, but there are products that definitely help you get through the difficulties of breastfeeding like the Ergobaby Natural Curve™ Nursing pillow! Here are some of the reasons why I love breastfeeding:
The health benefits for your baby.
Oh man, there are so many! First of all it’s all of your baby’s nutrition. Somehow your milk provides everything your baby needs which is crazy. Breast milk contains antibodies to help your baby fight off germs and it even lowers your baby’s risk of having allergies and asthma, both of which run in my family. There are studies that even suggest that breastfeeding is linked to higher IQ’s and thought to have even more benefits that are still being studied!
The health benefits for you.
This has always blown my mind. Of course most moms know that breastfeeding burns extra calories so it helps new moms lose the baby weight. But it’s also been found that breastfeeding lowers a moms risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and is thought to lower the risk of postpartum depression.
Saves you money.
Formula is expensive. A lot of my friends who formula feed also have babies that have indigestion or other problems with formulas and they have to use special extra expensive formula.
Saves you time.
This is what really sold me on breastfeeding. When your newborn wakes up at 3 am hungry would you rather pick them up out of the bassinet, pick up the Ergobaby Natural Curve™ Nursing pillow and nurse them in bed, and then return them to the bassinet, or get out of bed, walk downstairs, prepare a bottle, feed baby the bottle, and then put baby back down? Breastfeeding makes it easy to get out of the house as well. Breast milk is always the right temperature and no mixing required.
Forms a unique bond between mother and baby.
I’m kind of a sentimental/emotional person and for me one of the most amazing things about becoming a mom was the special bond it gave me and my baby. The sweet snuggles are just unbeatable. As Maddie Grace got older, even into the beginning of toddlerhood, the nursing time was something really special for us and even though she isn’t nursing now we have a great bond that I believe started with breastfeeding. I’m so excited to be on the journey now with our little Tripp!
One product I’ve found necessary for breastfeeding is the Ergobaby Natural Curve™ Nursing pillow! I’ve used several nursing pillows throughout breastfeeding both of my kids and this one is my favorite. It is made from solid, supportive foam with a unique contour to help properly position baby tummy-to-tummy at a good height, aiding baby’s digestion. It will also save you from slouching while nursing your baby which means less back pain for mama! In case of any accidents it’s super easy to take the cover off and wash. It’s super soft and comfortable for both mama and baby making it a new mommy must have!
Tomorrow (June 8th) there is an Ergobaby Twitter party from 12-1 PM EST that I will be joining in for. It should be a lot of fun – follow @ergobaby to join in!
