I finally feel like I’m getting the hang of the two kids thing and the season changes and throws me way off. Yes it’s officially summer now (although it’s felt like it for a while) and that means there are extra things that need to be thrown in my humongous bag to survive the hot days (although with my frazzled mom brain, I’m always forgetting a thing or two). But here is what my ideal summer diaper bag has in it besides just diapers and wipes:
Buzz Away Extreme Bug Spray – The mosquitoes here in Atlanta are out of control, and we are a family that enjoys outdoor activities. Most bug sprays have the nastiest chemicals in them which makes me want to keep them far away from my kids. Buzz Away Extreme is a botanical formula that is DEET-free and family friendly. It contains essential oils so you know it’s good, specifically: cedarwood, citronella, peppermint, eucalyptus, and lemongrass. These give it the most amazing smell. Plus it does a great job of repelling mosquitoes for up to 4 hours, ticks up to 2 and 1/2, black flies and gnats. I don’t put this on the baby yet as he’s under 6 months, but since both me and Maddie Grace are very sensitive to bug bites we use it frequently. Save 10% off any Buzz Away Extreme product from Quantumhealth.com with the code 10OFFBUZZ.
Sunscreen – I’ve also recently become aware of how terrible chemicals in sunscreen are. Luckily, there are plenty of all natural options to try out like, although I’ve found that most are only sold online!
Reusable Swim Diapers and Bathing Suits – Disposable swim diapers do nothing. Nothing. But I like to have something along in case we come across a splash pad or fountain while out and about since Maddie Grace loves them.
Sunglasses – It’s been so bright and sunny here that I always have my sunnies on me. Right now I’m loving these Burberry ones from Shop Ditto (get your first month free with code ‘CASUALCLAIRE’).
Hats – This is what I most often forget. The sun is so harsh on our little ones and a hat is a great way to provide them with some extra protection. I try to find that hats that have SPF in them as well!
Snacks Galore – I don’t know what it is about warm weather but Maddie Grace seems to eat twice as much. I always bring plenty of snacks to keep her occupied.
Makeup – The summer heat melts my face right off. I have a little bag packed with extra makeup items so I can do touch ups on the go.
A big, durable diaper bag – Canvas bags, cloth bags, leather bags… none are good for water activities with kids. You don’t want to gorgeous the pretty diaper bags that you have to get ruined. You’ll need one that is durable and strong, resists the elements, but is large enough for holding everything you have. This one is large, polyester, and zips up, and would be perfect for your beach trip, and if you’re wanting to splurge on designer consider this great nylon one.

What do you make sure to always have on hand in the summer?
Definitely diaper bag necessities!
We can’t leave the house without wipes, bug spray and sunscreen!
I seriously cannot handle the mosquitoes right now. So awful! I’m going to get some of this!!
Those are all great essentials. I love natural bug sprays – I’ll have to look this one up! The sunscreen we use is Babyganics, and it seems to work well, plus has natural ingredients. And what is it with kids eating more while they’re out?? Maybe it’s other kids around – my kid sees a snack, and it’s game over.
