Not convinced I’m crazy yet? The other night we took our 2 year old and 7 month old bowling at Main Event. Yes, you read that right. And you know what? All of us had an amazing time! Tripp hung out in his stroller and for Maddie Grace we used the bumpers and a ‘dragon tail’ ramp to help her roll the ball down the lane and she thought it was the coolest thing that has ever happened. Main Event was the perfect family night activity and I think I can speak for everyone in my family that we really look forward to returning.
So here is why you should take your toddler bowling:
(1) They’ll love it. I don’t know if it was the sounds, the lights, or the excitement of rolling the ball, but there was a smile on Maddie Grace’s face the whole time that we were bowling. She kept shouting out “I’m winning!” (she wasn’t) and clapping her hands every time a pin was knocked over. I’m talking pure joy people. If you like seeing your kid happy, you should take them bowling.
(2) It teaches them sportsmanship. From taking their turn, to cheering for your opponent, bowling is a great opportunity to introduce a toddler to the concept of sportsmanship!
(3) Family Bonding. One of the great things about bowling I think is cheering other family members on and just creating memories with each other. When Maddie Grace wasn’t bowling herself she got to watch her dad bowl and clap and cheer for him. She pretty much thought he was superman every time he took a turn. I’ve read that families who participate in leisure activities together tend to have closer bonds, which makes sense, and I think it’s good to start this practice young!
(4) You can eat and drink while having fun with your child. Can you say delicious food and margaritas? At Main Event you can order food and drinks from a server that comes to your lane who will bring it out to you. It’s the perfect setup! There is a full service bar with innovative cocktails, craft beer, and wine, and an impressive menu from which we got delicious salads and chicken tacos that were to die for!
(5) Time unplugged. I think too often with our kids we are on our phones checking the news or email, or have the TV/iPad on to distract the kids so we can enjoy ourselves when out and about. Bowling meant that our kids didn’t have to have screen time, and we weren’t on the phone ourselves the whole time, but instead we just enjoyed each others company and having fun as a family, which is something I think most families (at least ours) can use more of!
Main Event was so accommodating I would definitely recommend going there to anyone with young kids. The staff were all super sweet, their shoe sizes started at a size toddler 9, and with the ease of the dragon tail and bumpers, and a super lightweight ball a staff member got us, everything was just perfect. In addition to bowling there are more than 100 interactive games for players of all ages and skill levels! Main Event has 27 locations across the U.S. so make sure you check out whether there is one near you and give them some love on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
What are some of your favorite family activities to do with young children? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
