Motherhood is scary. Is my kid going to fall and break a bone? Is that man a little too interested in my children? Am I teaching them enough? Are they behind? Is something wrong with my child? Is that a weird bump on them? Do they have a fever? These are the thoughts that run through moms heads ever day. And my kids are young – only 2 and 9 months. I’m sure that as they get older and more independent that these fears increase. As you start not having them in your eyesight more, as they become more capable of doing things on their own, you worry about what could go wrong. All these ‘what ifs’ are always in the back of every mother’s head – I’m pretty sure they will still be there when my children are grown and have children of their own.
The age of technology that we live in can be a blessing when it comes to children, at a certain age they can call and text to let their parents know where they are and that they are okay, but it also brings a whole new wave of fear. Are you really sure what your child is doing on the computer? What if they are cyber bullied by other kids? What if they encounter a predator and fall into their trap? Even with my 2 year old daughter Maddie Grace I have fears. She enjoys watching shows and playing games on the iPad as much as any other 2 year old. But even on Youtube weird stuff comes up sometimes. She was watching her ‘Peppa Pig Egg’ shows (toddler moms know this one – where the strange lady unwraps chocolate eggs with Peppa toys inside) and she clicked on another video. This video that she started watching was a scary version of Peppa that someone out there made that had spiders and all other sorts of creepy things on her and she started freaking out! I couldn’t believe how easy it was for her to access that and I knew then that we had to do something to something to keep her safe when she uses electronic devices!
That’s when I learned about Sophos Home – a software security company that offers a free program to install on your devices that includes a content filter for little ones. It also protects from hackers, malware, and includes an antivirus. To go along with it Sophos has a Tool Kit with tips and tricks for keeping your children safe! It was really easy to get the Sophos Home program running on our computers and the tool kit showed us what setting to put our phones and iPads on to give us some peace of mind while our kids are using electronic devices!
With Sophos Home we have one less thing to worry about, so my focus can go back to making memories with my family. Like this halloween – here is what we got up to:
