I often think how. motherhood looks different today than it did in my mother or grandmother’s day. I mean… the internet. It changed everything. And smart phones. I can’t even imagine motherhood without my phone. And Alexa? Hearing kids say “Alexa, play some dance music”, like mine do, was probably not a common occurrence in homes at that time.
Seriously, even as a kid I would not have imagined something like Alexa existing, or how useful it would be to me as a mom. We have multiple Alexa’s in our home, and every member of our family (except baby Millie) uses Alexa on a daily basis. I mean, Tripp talking to Alexa is one of the cutest things in the entire world.
If you’re like me, eve if you already have an Amazon Alexa device you don’t know it’s full potential. Have you ever thought to say “Alexa, make my life easier?” because yes she knows how to do even that. If you have one what you do know is that setting up your Alexa device is super easy. But don’t just set it up and move on! I just recently learned about Alexa skills. What is a skill? Something Alexa can do to help you. You can use Alexa skills to set up your Alexa to do things like wake you up with your favorite song when you ask, tell you what the best Prime deals of the day are, or even dictate text messages to your Alexa!
So here it goes. If you are a mom using Alexa skills are the best modern hack to make your life easier. And here are the skills that I end up using most in motherhood:
Mommy-gram. This is a really fun skill for moms of young children especially. My kids are way to young to text (they can’t even read or write yet) but this is a way for them to communicate with me that they love. I can be in another room, and the kids say to Alexa “Alexa, ask Mommy-gram where are you?” and I get a text saying that, and can reply with “in the office” and Alexa will say that back to them. Sometimes they are sweet and even say things like “Alexa, ask Mommy-gram to say I love you mommy!”
Calm now. Oh goodness this is one we use a lot. When one of my older kids are in a “mood” as we call it, someone can yell out “Alexa, open calm now” and she provides us with proven calming techniques”
Start nagging me. One of my biggest struggles in motherhood is procrastinating. Far too often I just forget to do things! And when I’m tired especially I have a tendency to sit down and zone out and not be productive. With this skill I can say “Alexa, start nagging me!” and when she asks me about what I can say something like “going for a jog” and she will check every minute to see if I’ve done it yet!
I am so glad that I learned I can ask my Alexa to do waaaay more than just play dance music. These Alexa skills have been a total game changer in my house! Have you tried out Alexa skills? What one is your favorite? Tell me more below!
